I want to start Part 2 of The Power of Persistence with the quote I ended Part 1 with. I hope those who read this piece are able to take something away from it.
“The most essential factor is persistence – the determination never to allow your energy or enthusiasm to be dampened by the discouragement that must inevitably come.” _James Whitcomb Riley
Developing or generating persistence is all about mindset. It’s about mindset because most of the time, we have to shift the way we think in order to be persistent.
It is my personal belief that it takes courage and determination to operate with persistence. Whenever you begin to pursue that lofty or worthwhile goal, it is important that you begin with the right frame of mind.
Know this going in; disappointments, setbacks, temporary defeat, hurdles, bumps in the road, etc., will come. That’s a given. That’s par for the course, it’s the nature of the beast (so to speak).
A Picture of Persistence - The story of Thomas Edison’s efforts to come up with a suitable filament to make his electric light bulb invention work, always intrigued me. As the story goes, Edison tried out thousands of different versions of the filaments and thousands of them failed.
Wow! Can you imagine failing thousands of time and still having enough persistence and belief in what you are doing to keep going?
I love what Edison said concerning his trying thousands of times. He said, “I have not failed. I’ve simply discovered ten thousand ways that don’t work.” That is so very powerful!
Being mentally ready before those difficult times come will help us deal with them so much more effectively when they do come. Discouragement can break you down if you are not ready for it.
A lot of people quit in the face of adversity. A lot of people quit when things don’t seem to be working out the way they hoped that they would.
Here’s the thing, if you really believed in something before you got started, you cannot allow the challenges that rise up to cause you to quit.
Persistence gives you a never-give-up attitude. If we don’t have persistence, we CAN shift our thinking to generate it.
Develop the mind-set of not giving up! Tell yourself, over and over again if you need too, “I’m not giving up!” “I am not quitting!”
People start things (a business, a relationship, a marriage, an organization, etc., with quitting on their mind! They’ll say things like, “I’ll try it and if It doesn’t work.” What the heck kind of mentality is that?
Persistence is the key to open-up the doors that would remain locked, without it.
It is your determination and persistence that will make you a successful person.” _ Kenneth J. Hutchins
Ken Envoy said, “persistence is nothing more than staying in motion.” The idea is to continue moving forward in the direction of your dreams.
Recognize how powerful persistence is! Many people have become great successes in life because of it. I know you’ve heard this: Success Leaves Clues.
“We are made to persist. That’s how we find out who we are.” _Tobias Wolff
How does one develop persistence? As you may already know, you start with a desire to do so. Desire is the starting point to all achievement. If you are going to be persistent, you’ll also have to be determined.
Make small efforts each day. Keep moving forward, keep on learning and growing. You learn so much through persistence. Don’t quit! Develop the mindset of “not quitting in the face of challenges.”
Persistent people are also people who are adaptive. It’s okay to make the necessary adjustments on the path to your desired outcome, even if it means taking a path you've never considered.
“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try one more time.” _Thomas Edison
