Any online business lives and dies by traffic. If you have no one visiting your site, you have no opportunity to monetize your site. You could have the best website, the most amazing products and training, but if you are the only person that sees it, then it isn't very lucrative, is it?
Why You Need to Generate Traffic
In the online marketing world, there are two ways to generate traffic. I qualify that as "online marketing" because offline marketing is a totally different area. Possibly an area for an article! So, the obvious difference between paid and free traffic is the cost, right? But the unseen difference is that one of these takes a lot longer than the other. It's also longer lasting and takes much more effort. But, hey, if you don't have the cash to spend on traffic, free will have to do!
Will it take a lot of effort?
You want free, right? It's gonna be a lot of work, but if you stick with it, maintain it, nurture it, you'll have a growing number of visitors to your site. This traffic stream is ongoing and will continue to grow with exposure, unlike paid traffic methods that are a quick one-shot.
You will need content. To give away, to sell, to entice. Don't plan on searching the web and copy/pasting your way through this. It isn't that simple or easy. You're going to have to create your own quality content and you're gonna have to do it often. At least at the beginning.
Where do I start?
While there are many, many ways to get free traffic, we'll just cover what I consider to be the top 3. We'll have a future article on more ways if this article is popular and the readers request it. I recommend implementing all three of these tips as they are interrelated and will give you great leverage in your effort to get traffic.
1. Create An eBook to Give Away
One way to start is to write eBooks yourself. Creating your own products is, by far, the best in terms of a quality final product. Remember, your name is going on everything you put out there. You don't want to have crap floating around the internet associated with your name. It will come back to haunt you. I promise. So, take the time and write your own stuff. Got it?
If you want to know how to get ideas about what to write, first get yourself a notebook you can carry with you. Take that book with you everywhere. You never know when inspiration will strike you. Write down your ideas. Just write everything you can think of as if you were writing for the newspaper. You can search the internet for ideas, just don't copy them. Apply the search results to your chosen market or niche and write them in your little book. Start a document on your computer and start writing. You can even just write snippets for each title you've gathered. Don't worry about the length, don't worry about the format. Just write everything down.
When you have enough ideas to get you started, pick a topic from your notebook and document and start writing. Make sure you have an informed opinion and keep writing until you have gotten your point across. Once you have, look back at what you've done. If it is long enough for an eBook, great, if not, it's an article for your blog. We'll talk about that, too. Make sure to have a footer set up in your document pointing back to your website. Very Important.
Another way to get started is to use PLR or Private Label Rights products to kick start you. Remember, you aren't using someone else's work to replace your own effort. You will use the material in the PLR to help you create your own spin. Don't just stick your name on someone else's work and publish it. Chances are, if you found this PLR, others have as well and they've taken the easy way out. Don't be that person.
As a last resort, you can outsource to a freelance writer at Fiverr, iWriter, or another service. But we're talking free, right? These you'll have to pay for, if you can afford it. But even then, you will still need to edit the content to be sure it is relevant and reflects your own writing tone.
2. Write Articles
As stated above, you will create your content. Sometimes, it isn't long enough to be considered enough for an eBook. But that is where articles come in. We'll discuss in the next section about what to do with your articles. For now, if you didn't get any article length items out of your list, pick a few headlines (even if you made an eBook on it, especially if you made an eBook on it!) and crank out some articles.
At the end of each article, you should place an "author's box". This is where you can put a 2 sentence bio about yourself and leave a link back to your website. Very Important.
The bare minimum word count for an acceptable article is 600 words. Anything less than that I consider a "blurb" and not really read-worthy. Don't go overboard though! A 6,000 word article would be better as an eBook with a summary article to accompany it. Good article lengths are around 1,000-2,000 words. Stick to that and you should be fine. Now get crackin'!
3. Create Videos
Believe it or not, video is fast becoming a preferred method for "readers" to receive information. While creating a video is relatively easy, creating a decent video worth watching is a little more difficult. And don't worry about having to be on camera. There are many different kinds of videos you can create and many free tools to assist you. Just do a Google search and you can find them online.
First, create an outline of what you want to cover in your video. Don't go crazy here. You want to keep your video short and sweet. Around 5 minutes total is a good compromise between enough content and amount of time to create. Can you make it 8 or 10 minutes? Sure, just use the 5 minute rule as a guideline. If you can't cover your material, and the material is necessary to express your informed opinion, expand your video time. But bear in mind that not many people will sit through an entire 20 minute video on a single topic without you having some street cred. OK?
Once you've created your outline, create the script. Whether you decide you will narrate the video yourself or if you will use a Text-To-Speech program is up to you. I usually narrate my own videos and I like to work with bullet points and ad-lib through it. That's my own personal style. But if you've decided on the TTS route, you'll need a script with the exact words you want in the video. You can find TTS software online. Search Google.
Next, you need to decide if you want to sit in front of the camera or if you want to capture the screen while showing a presentation. I tend to do screen capture of my presentation and talk through it. I'm not yet comfortable talking directly to a camera. There are also free screen capture programs out there, and also presentation software like Open Office. Be sure to have a resources or credits slide where you put a link back to your website. Very Important.
Put all the steps above together and you have yourself a video. Nifty, right?
OK, I've created my content. Now what?
You've got your stuff, now how do you put it in front of people to get traffic to your site? Remember all those links you put in your content? That is what will drive people to your site. And your site should have all your article content on it.
Post on your Blog
When you create an article, put it on your blog! There is no better way to begin to create authority in a market niche than to have good, actionable information on your blog. People will come back to read more and more. While they are there, you should have opt-in boxes in your sidebars and possibly pop-up subscription links and/or subscription links at the end of your content. Don't worry about having a lot of ways for people to subscribe. It's become the industry norm.
You can also put your videos here on your blog. I recommend that you don't actually host the videos on your blog, rather have a post that has an embed code or URL pointing to the video that is hosted elsewhere. This will help keep bandwidth utilization lower on your site and help not to slow it down. See below for more info.
For your eBooks, if you've created an article that compliments it, you should use your blog to promote it with a link to it (obviously, capture their information before giving away the eBook). If you haven't created one, do it.
Post to Social Media
You know all those blog posts you just made? Post them to Social Media. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tubmlr, you name it. Even if you don't have a following, post it there. At some point as you start to gain followers, it will be good for them to see that you have content already. Adds to your credibility.
Post to Video Sharing Sites
Put your videos on a free video hosting site like YouTube. YouTube is also a video marketplace with its own complex search engine algorithms. People are on YouTube searching for things nearly as much as Google or other search engines. Not only is it good for marketing, it is free video hosting for you. Remember above, we were talking about not hosting video on your site? Sites like YouTube will allow you to upload a video and link back to it.
Now, while you are uploading your file, you should take advantage of adding keywords to help people land on your video when they do searches. Just add a bunch of tags/keywords that you think people might use as search phrases and you're good to go.
Email your list
Not everyone has a list. If you are just starting out, it is likely that you don't. But as these methods are put in place you'll start getting people on your list. Notify them when you have a new post on your blog, a new video release or what have you. This is how you provide value to your list and get them to see your site as the place to go for answers.
So, there you have it. 3 slick ways to generate traffic to your website. The important message to take away from this is to get going. Do something. Stop reading a million different methods on how to do something. Pick one and follow it until success. You have it in you. You can do it.
