How To Stay Focused When Things Are In Upheaval

Is the information, misinformation and maybe outright lies about the coronavirus, distracting you from your best intentions?  Over the past few weeks, you might feel in a panic waiting for the other shoe to drop or worrying there is no known way out.  Or you might be in a bit of a funk. 

Sometimes it’s not easy to stay out of a funk or feeling overwhelmed, especially when it is a global issue versus a personal or local issue looming.  I will share with you what I do to stay out of a bad place and to get back to a positive place again.

The first thing I do is come back to my purpose. While motivation is the thing that gets you going, it often fizzles out when the adrenaline rush wears off. Purpose, on the other hand, is what lights the fire inside you and helps to smooth over the rough times. So, focus on your purpose and set the intention to concentrate on the things that inspire you.

With that intention in place, I take action. The fastest way I know to make myself feel better is to reach out to someone else and help them. Being of service shifts my focus away from the things bringing me down and onto someone else, in a positive way. Simply telling someone that you miss them or that you love them, will quickly boost your mood and theirs too!

Finally, I combat the negativity with positivity. You need to be aware of the choices that you are making. Are your decisions bringing positivity or negativity into your life?

Personally, I avoid watching the news because it has such a negative impact on my thoughts. Instead, I choose to listen to positive things that uplift me, specifically because they make me feel good. I also actively look for ways to infuse my environment with positivity and surround myself with people who raise my energy. Added together, these things will lift you out of the doldrums and get you moving again.

Avoid letting the funk fester. Do something nice for someone in your life and free yourself from being in a funk today!

Free yourself of distress, worry or overwhelm with these three tips:

  1. Smile more. Smile at the barista, at the clerk at the gas station and at the stranger walking down the street. Smiles are contagious, which means you can start your own feel-good movement. As an added bonus, smiling helps to decrease your heart rate, your blood pressure, and your stress levels too!
  2. Reconnect with people in your life. One of the quickest ways I know to lift the blues is to reach out to someone and let them know how much they mean to you. Send a card or text or pick up your phone and make a call. The reconnection will make both of you feel great!
  3. Do something nice for someone else. Be of service in the best way you can. Remember the smallest actions matter. Something as simple as holding the door for a stranger is an act of kindness that could turn their day around, and you can feel good about that.
